Home networks are a blend of laptops, phones, TVs, and smart devices. The router controls them all. If it is weak, everything connected to it is exposed.

Change the default admin login

The router admin password is not the same as your Wi-Fi password. Update it first and store it in your password manager.

  • Update router firmware.
  • Change the admin username and password.
  • Turn off remote administration.

Upgrade Wi-Fi security settings

Use WPA3 if available, or WPA2 if not. Avoid older modes like WEP. Set a long Wi-Fi password and update it yearly.

Separate smart devices

Put smart TVs, cameras, and speakers on a guest network. That keeps them away from your laptops and phones if one gets compromised.

If your router supports automatic updates, turn them on. It is the easiest long-term protection you can add.

Ongoing maintenance

Reboot your router monthly, review connected devices, and remove any that look unfamiliar. Keep an eye on new firmware releases.
